People naturally wants to heat the buildings they are in rather than heat themselves. It would be best for the environment as a whole to wear a pair of socks or put on a sweater when at home instead of cracking up the heater. One way to keep warm is to adjust your thinking of how can you help yourself to keep warm.
Buildings are horribly inefficient consumers of heat. In winter, a vast amount of energy is wasted heating up empty homes during the day and warming empty commercial buildings at night. Even when buildings are in use, unoccupied spaces are routinely kept at the same temperature as those that are occupied.
Some spaces in particular are spectacular heat wasters. The huge lobbies of many big corporations that serves as greedy heat wasters status symbols are good examples of this energy waste, usually occupied no more than a handful of people, yet every cubic meter is kept warm around the clock. Its no wonder that the heating, ventilation and perhaps air conditioning of these mammoth buildings account for 13% of total energy consumption in corporate America,. the data is not available for china and other developing countries,. so you can imagine the percentage of heating being waste when adding all the downtown corporate headquarters of the world.
One thing comes to mind though is that it is people rather than buildings who care about being comfortably warm.
Have you ever noticed patios at restaurants?, people being warm by these tall mushroom shaped infra-red heaters? and they continue to be on while the room sits empty.
What if it is possible to aim the heat more accurately at people as they move around? and since everything is an app nowadays why not make it work with a smart phone where people can adjust their own preferred room temperature. Each individual can be warmed by a number of LEDS install on the ceilings of atriums of corporate buildings and halls. Heated when needed. It’ll be almost like having your own personal sun following you around.
It’s a crazy idea, I know. Someone probably is already working on it or thought of it I’m sure. But the days are numbered when these kind of crazy ideas are here helping us get better bang for our bucks in terms of a smart way to heat up our buildings and saving us from extinction.
